Modern Foreign Languages - Mrs Turner

French at Ripley Junior School

As directed in the 2014 National Curriculum, all children in KS2 are taught a Modern Foreign Language - at RJS we focus on French. When children come to us in Year  3, we begin this journey, focusing on the basic conversational skills, building on this and applying this knowledge as they travel through school.

Classes teach French in a variety of ways:

  • Weekly sessions - this is sometimes in a full hour or shorter spells, such as 15 minute 'blasts'.
  • Themed days or afternoons.
  • Oral focus - using and applying the language.
  • Written tasks - focusing on the spelling and construction of French sentences.
  • Food tasting
  • Videos and interactive resources
  • Flash cards
  • Research using the internet, Bilingual dictionaries etc.
  • Whole Year group sessions

Elements we teach are:

  • Introducing yourself - hello, describing yourself (name, age, where you live).
  • Classroom Instructions
  • The Alphabet
  • Days and Months
  • Animals
  • Food
  • Places around town
  • French Culture - major towns, villages and 'traditions'.

An overview of French is available on the main curriculum page - see individual year group maps.
