*NEW* Transition for Y2s to RJS

Welcome to our mini-site about all things transition

 

We would like to invite your child in from 9.30am until 11.30am on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th August.
Your child may attend one or both of the mornings. Your child is NOT expected to come in school uniform.


If your child would like to attend please come down into school via the main gates on Poplar Avenue where you will be met by some of the RJS staff.

Please do not worry if your child is unable to attend, there will be plenty of 'transition' on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September when the children return to school. Our initial focus will be getting the children happy and settled in their new school and will make sure your child is comfortable and confident in school before we teach the curriculum. We know and appreciate that a lot of children have been out of school for a significant period of time

Your child should now know which class they are in. If you are unsure again do please contact Mrs Hardy using the information above. Please be aware that we have worked on these class lists with our infant schools as they are the people who know your children the best. They know the personalities that work well together and those less so. 

We have invited all of our Year 2s to our Class Dojo. Each child should have had an email with the login details. We know and appreciate you are still at your infant school but have invited you so you can begin to learn more about us.

Key Skills you will need in KS2

 

KS2 skill: going into school independently

In KS1, you might have taken your child right up to the classroom, or even in to the room itself, however in KS2 our children need to be dropped in the playground in the morning and let in through our gates.

 

How you can help: You can explain that there always be staff on both of our gates who are happy to help with any worries and of course, they can stand with their friends until it is time to go in to class.

 

KS2 skill: working in a group

In KS1, group work is typically closely supervised by a teacher or Teaching Assistant. But in KS2, children are expected to be more independent when working in groups. This involves a whole raft of new skills, such as listening to each other, explaining ideas clearly, taking turns, helping others, allowing everyone to contribute, and pulling the group’s ideas together into the end product.

 

How you can help: You could look for opportunities to practise group work at home, such as baking a cake together, with one person reading the recipe and the other weighing out the ingredients, or

collaborating with siblings or friends on making a LEGO model.

 

KS2 skill: managing homework

We understand that children don’t always want to do homework and so we don’t expect you to carry out large tasks at home – we are the experts in teaching, so all we ask is that you support your child’s key skills at home. This means all we ask your child to do is read at home three times a week (at least!) and practice their times tables. Children are given Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) logins at the start of the year and we ask that you engage with this as much as possible to build those core skills.

 

How you can help: Check your child’s reading diary regularly, and help them record their reading in there. This will help them earn those precious dojo points too! Provide opportunities, where possible, for children to access TTRS.

 

KS2 skill: organisation

Children in KS2 are expected to take more responsibility for organising themselves, for example by remembering to bring their reading books and PE kit to school. Children are rewarded for remembering their diaries, especially if they have also remembered to record their reading!

 

How you can help: Try to get your child into the habit of unpacking and repacking any bags themselves the evening before going anywhere. Please ensure you check your child’s reading record/diaries at least weekly and write in when you read with your child.

 

KS2 skill: independent work

In KS2 children are expected to work independently and try to solve problems themselves. One of our learning attitudes is ‘Thinking for Myself’ and children are rewarded for showing this attitude in their learning and their general behaviour.

 

How you can help: There are lots of ways to build your child’s independence at home, for example by giving them some household responsibilities. If your child encounters a problem, encourage them to work through it on their own. You can be there to bounce ideas off, but try to let them reach their own decisions.

 

KS2 skill: concentration

Being able to concentrate for longer periods goes hand-in-hand with the ability to work independently. In KS2, children need to get used to staying on task for increasing lengths of time, maintaining their focus and avoiding distracting other people if possible.

 

How you can help: A good night’s sleep is really important to help aid focus in school. It’s also key that your children have a water bottle in school to ensure they stay hydrated. You could also improve their concentration skills by playing family games that involve focusing on the task in hand, such as Scrabble or other board games.

 

KS2 skill: extended writing

In KS2 Children are expected to be able to write at greater length and to develop their writing by using more sophisticated sentence structures and a range of grammar. To help with this, we provide children with ‘steps to success’ to give their writing direction and purpose.

 

How you can help: Reading is an easy way to help children develop the skills for writing, the more they read, the better their writing will become. Children may want to create their own pieces of writing while at home – we would love to see anything they have produced, whether it be a diary or a story, or anything in between!

 

KS2 skill: coping with playtime

In many schools, KS2 play is generally more independent and children are expected to behave responsibly when moving around school. We do, however, have organised activities and games to play at lunch times, led by adults. Children at RJS can also use the trim track, but need to learn how to do so sensibly. One big change in junior school is that the children lose their afternoon playtime. Children have an assembly most afternoons to help break up the day though.

 

How you can help: Explain the differences between what they may have been used to at infant school and encourage your child to join in with organised activities where possible. You could even practice some typical playground games at home.

 

KS2 skill: choosing reading books

At some point in KS2 children may become ‘free readers’, having finished the school reading scheme. They’ll be expected to choose their own books, either from the school library or the class bookshelf; they may also be allowed to choose a reading book from home.

 

How you can help: Encourage your children to read a wide range of texts – these do not always have to be books. Your children will then be able to develop their taste and this will help guide them towards texts they will enjoy. We will, however, encourage your child to read a wide range of material.

 

KS2 skill: writing in pen

In KS2, children may gain their pen licence and be able to complete their work in a handwriting pen, rather than pencil. from writing in pencil to using a pen. Children have to consistently show their handwriting is good enough before being awarded the prestigious pen licence. Beware – these can be revoked if a child does not maintain the high standard they have set.

 

How you can help: Practice makes perfect, so spending some time helping your child with handwriting exercises will help them make the transition from pencil to pen. Just encouraging your children to write as much as possible will help.
