Parent Information

Welcome to Ripley Junior School!


We are really looking forward to working with you this year. This year, the Year 3 team is Miss Butler, Mrs Hardy, Mr Holling and Mrs Whysall. Mrs Briggs will be supporting us.


We know that the first term (and sometimes year!) at a new school can be daunting and stressful for both children and parents so we like to work closely with you and the children to help transition run smoothly. Your children will have spent several days with us during the last academic year to help them settle into their new school and we have met with teachers at our feeder schools to find out key information to support learning.


At various times in the year, we will invite you into school to meet formally and informally with the team so we can share information and you can ask questions (coffee mornings, open days and parent meetings). At any time, you can contact the office, the home-school liaison officer or a member of the team to discuss any question or concerns you have (as long as we are not teaching!) Book an appointment with a member of staff and we will try our best to work with you to resolve any issues. You could also leave a message in your child’s home-school diary or on homework, which is checked weekly by their teacher.


If you would like to come and work in school to support, please let us know! We love working alongside parents, and encourage you to come and share your skills to enrich the teaching experiences in school. If you can spare any time in the week to come and listen to children read, it would be greatly appreciated too!


Personal Details

It is important to keep personal details up to date – especially phone numbers! We send texts to remind you of important events and to let you know if your child has any awards in our Friday assembly.


Personal Belongings

Please make sure all of your child's belongings are labelled with their name and class. Remember to bring your book bag - which we provided on transition day. Please remember that due to space in the cloakrooms, we ask you to refrain from bringing school bags into school - please just bring your PE kit in a draw string bag and your school book bag. As we provide stationery, you do not need to bring your pencil case as this can lead to distractions during lessons and cause tension between children when they misplace objects.Thank you.


Dinner Money

Dinner and Trip money should be paid using the online payment system, ParentPay. On this, you are able to pay for school lunch, book a place on school trips and clubs and to pay for before and after school club. You will be given a personalised log in when you arrive at RJS.


Before School:

The gate opens at 8:45, you say goodbye to your children on the playground and they come straight into school to begin their learning. If you have any messages, pass them to a member of staff who is on the playground or ring the office and the message will be passed onto the relevant member of staff.


Breakfast Club:

A breakfast club runs from 7.30 each morning, by Mrs Chatterton. If you would like your child to attend, please contact the school office.


After School:

Children are dismissed by their teacher at 3:30 from the gym door onto the playground. Children may only leave once we have seen an adult who they know and are expecting. It is helpful for us and your child if you stand behind the wall as it gives us a better view of the playground to identify parents more quickly. Please let us know if your arrangements change. We also have an afterschool provision (STEPs Club) which runs until 5:30. Please ask at the office for more details.




Year 3 will set homework on a Friday, to be returned on the following Wednesday. This allows class teachers to mark and work with children as needed. Homework is handed out in a hole punched homework folder. Children were provided with a resource pack on Transition Day, with items in to help work at home (100 squares, vocab mats etc.)


Homework is set to match the needs of your child and may not be the same as a friend/ relative.


Homework usually consists of:

  • A maths/ English task – this builds on the learning during the week.
  • Practise target times tables (‘Times Table Challenge’)
  • Spelling/Phonics task (this could be word or sentence work, word searches, puzzles etc.)
  • Read 3 times per week, recording it in their journal (school book, own book, magazine etc. to an adult, sibling or friend)
  • Every fortnight, children are give a Brain Builder task - this is an open ended activity which can be completed in any way your child sees fit! We regularly share these with the class to show their amazing work.


Children are expected to complete homework and read each week, as per our school homework policy.

PE Kit:

Children should wear: plain white T-Shirt/Polo, shorts and plimsolls/trainers. You may send children into school with jogging bottoms and jackets for cooler months, as we will still complete some lessons outside. These should be a plain, dark colour.


Please make sure ALL kit is labelled and in a draw-string bag. It is best if children bring in their kit at the start of the half term and leave it in school until the end of the half term, as we often have additional sessions with coach and sports visitors.


Children will need to place their kit into a draw-string bag, which is named.


Trips, Theme Days and Visitors

Throughout the year we will have various themed days and visitors to enhance our curriculum. To see visits from previous years, visit the archived class pages. Days have included:


World book day – a chance for children to explore new authors and dress up as their favourite characters.

Bolsover Castle – explore the location and purpose of castles and investigate the lives of the people who lived in them.

The Butterfly House – a chance to experience the rainforest and the animal that live there.

Creswell Crags – Visit and explore what it would be like to live in caves during the Stone Age!


You will be informed of any visits well in advance.
