During the autumn term, we will be discovering who ruled over England and where these rulers lived. Most of our subjects will relate to this topic to immerse the children and create a cross-curricular approach.
For our English work most of the children will be taught by their class teacher however a small group will go and work with Mrs Concannon. This group of learners will spend more time recapping the Year 2 curriculum and will work at a slower pace.
To begin the term we will be reviewing the grammar we learnt, and any we missed, from Year 2. We will then be applying these skills to a descriptive piece of writing. We will then move on to create newspaper articles and a piece of persuasive writing relating to the legend of Robin Hood.
As part of our daily reading lessons, we will be learning how to look for deeper meaning in the texts we read. We will do this by using VIPERS questions which focus on vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation of authorial choice, retrieval of information and summarising the text. We will explore lots of different genres of text.
We have daily spelling lessons at RJS, during the autumn term we will review the spelling patterns we learnt in Year 2 including vowel diagraphs and digraphs before moving onto the year 3 suffixes and prefixes. There are also phonics lessons for those children who need to review their phonic knowledge before moving onto spelling.
The autumn term focuses heavily on number and calculations in Year 3. This provides children with the skills they will need to apply later on in the year for all other areas of maths. We will cover: number and place value; both mental and written methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication; and understand how division and multiplication are linked.
During Autumn Term 1 we will be discovering the locations of the UK’s castles and exploring the reasons why these castles were built in these locations. When we return after half-term, we will move onto looking at who ruled the UK and the influence they had upon it.
For 3AH and 3LB, Science will be taught by Mrs Till, who is part of the PPA team. 3BF will be taught Science by Mrs Blowen and Mrs Flynn. We will be discovering the effects of forces and magnets upon objects during Autumn Term 1 and then learning all about light, including how light travels and how we see light during Autumn Term 2.
We are very lucky that all of the children have individual access to a Chrome Book for our Computing lessons. Initially, we will be learning basic computer skills such as: logging onto the Chrome Book and how to access the school programs including Purple Mash and TTRockstars.
We will spend time exploring how to use the internet safely and how to stay safe online before moving on to exploring Coding and Spreadsheets.
As we are new to Ripley Junior School and have been out of school for a significant period of time, we will be learning about why rules are important for keeping us all safe and happy. We will be learning how to learn by using our school learning attitudes and having a growth mind-set. We will then be exploring 'Difference and Diversity' as part of our new PSHE curriculum.
We will also react to anything that our children need.
As part of RE, we will be exploring 'What does it mean to be a Christian in Britain today?' This builds on work completed by the children in Key Stage 1. We shall then be learning about a new religion: Hinduism and will be exploring 'What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?'
As a school (taking on board the voice of our children) our MFL subject is now Spanish. This half term we are covering numbers to 10, greetings and saying our names.
For our Music for this term we shall be learning songs for our Harvest Festival. Why not ask your child what they have been learning?
During the Autumn Term we will complete one Art and one D&T topic, both relating to our 'Castles and Crowns' topic.
In Art we will be learning about the different sketching pencils and how they can be used to create shade and tone. We will then learn how to sketch portraits in the style of the royal portraits of the past as well as exploring primary, secondary and tertiary colours and colour mixing.
Our D&T work will focus on sewing and we will be learning some basic stitches to create a topic related bookmark.
Our PE focus for Autumn 1 will be athletics.
